    Not raining, but wet after heavy overnight rain, but a bit overcast with clouds showing a tinge of red from the rising sun. A lot cooler at 10½°C.

        I want to address some of the discussion about the lack of an exit wound with Charlie. I’m usually not interested in delving into most of this kind of online chatter, and I apologize this is somewhat graphic, but in this case, the fact that there wasn’t an exit wound is probably another miracle, and I want people to know.

        I just spoke with the surgeon who worked on Charlie in the hospital…

        He said the bullet “absolutely should have gone through, which is very very normal for a high powered, high velocity round. I’ve seen wounds from this caliber many times and they always just go through everything. This would have taken a moose or two down, an elk, etc.”

        But it didn’t go through. Charlie’s body stopped it.

        I mentioned to his doctor that there were dozens of staff, students, and special guests standing directly behind Charlie on the other side of the tent, and he replied:

        “It was an absolute miracle that someone else didn’t get killed.”

        “His bone was so healthy and the density was so so impressive that he’s like the man of steel. It should have just gone through and through. It likely would have killed those standing behind him too.”

        In the end, the coroner did find the bullet just beneath the skin.

        Even in death, Charlie managed to save the lives of those around him.

        Remarkable. Miraculous.

      3. Good morning. It goes on to say that the bullet was found lodged in his neck. I’m not sure why that’s an outrageous claim. Unity Mitford survived for years with a bullet lodged in her brain.

        1. Possibly burst artery, heart stopped beating shortly after. People live with bits of shrapnel in their brains post war etc, some even have metal plates installed (I think it was an actual operation at one time, to minimise epilepsy fits).

          1. Agreed. It was apparently an old weapon which does not produce the muzzle velocity of a modern rifle and cartridge. More like the old Lee Enfield .303 in that respect.

      Given the hills between us and the sun, it'll not be visible here for a couple of hours yet.

      1. It came over the hill to the east and was bright and 🌞 sunny but soon disappeared behind the bank of cloud just above.
        The invalid is still asleep at the moment. Jessie came to join us and she’s now moved to the window sill.

        We have plumbing woes again – thought we had that sorted with the new cylinder in the summer but when we finally arrived home on Friday night there was a drip again. Still dripping into a bucket.

    3. Just back from delivering the cats to the cattery. Once they knew where they were going, they were happy, as they like it there – also, the run outside let them empty themselves, so there was no eeuw or yukk in their travelling boxes – or their fur, so the temporary escape was a Good Thing!

        When we went on holiday last month, on the morning of our departure NO cats were to be seen. They did not appear and we had to go without seeing them. An anxious few hours later, neighbour reported that they were both fast asleep in their baskets in the porch.

    Indeed, the very word “indiscriminate” contradicts it. The Nazi campaign to exterminate Jews was not indiscriminate. So precise and complete were they in their killing that they scoured Europe with the intention of not leaving a Jew alive. Genocide meant exterminating a people and their culture – all that they thought and wrote and painted, all that they believed – so that it might be as though they had never existed. The enormity of this ambition was what the word genocide was coined to comprehend, since no existing word came close to covering it.

    1. There are those who would say it wasn’t genocide. I used to know someone who argued doggedly that Judaism is a religion not a race. Not true of course. My own DNA is 48% Ashkenazim. It’s clearly identifiable. (For what it’s worth, I finally fell out with that person when she swallowed the Covid nonsense in its entirety.) Is Palestinian a genetic identity? Is there evidence? Has anyone done the research?

        1. There was a case a while back where a Palestinian woman had a DNA test which identified her as Jordanian, which suggests that there are differences. Beyond that, I don’t know. Quite a few prominent Palestinians have definitely been Egyptian.

          1. Yasser Arafat was an Egyptian. It's enough to make you laugh at the charade if the consequences weren't so terrible.

          2. Edward Said too. Nasser passed a law that lead to the Said family business in Cairo closing down and them relocating to the US. In his fictional “autobiography” Said changed it to the Jews driving them out of Jerusalem, which never happened.

        1. All three of my brothers have had DNA tests and all returned the same results therefore I assume mine is the same. Our father was European Jewish. Mother was a Yorkshire lass, so as expected, there is a mix of Angle, Viking, Celtic etc on that side.

    2. I have been to the Yad Vashem Memorial and it is a very moving place. It is sad that the word “genocide” is so often misapplied to what is happening in Gaza where, far from reducing the number of citizens there, they have grown hugely in number since its creation.

      1. It’s like the difference in administering medication to cats and dogs. A dog will accept a pill wrapped in yummy food. A cat will eat the food but still spit out the pill. A vet once demonstrated to me how to make a cat swallow. I thought I’d succeeded but hours later found the pill on the carpet behind an armchair.

    One birthday after another….yesterday our eldest sons 46th. All the family here for a huge spread in the form of a local Thia takeaway. Not the four children of course.
    But the dish washer comes in very handy.
    What a lovely time we had. But good to get back to our usual calm and peace and quiet. Phew…..grandchildren.
    And today my good ladies 70 something birthday, she loves the expensive perfume and necklace I bought her, in a round about way. Only as I have not been able to set foot out of the house to buy her anything. But she's more than happy. Which is nice. 😊☺️🙂

    10½°C when I checked 1st thing at 06:30, but under 9° just now when I went out to do the bags.

    i) Why do we always talk about Gaza? Never a mention of the murder of Christians in Nigeria or Syria?

    ii) The MSM is under instructions from the PTB to down play the massacre of Christians by Muslims.

    As long as we can ignore the evidence and say that Islam poses no threat to either Christians or Jews then we can rest assured, believe that Islam is the Religion of Peace and be happy.

    Is Kruger a man of integrity or is he yet another trougher like so many MPs?

    I think that any MP who has been elected as a representative of one party should be compelled to stand in a by election if he or she changes party.

    2. I did talk to a woman recently who had six of the shots. She actually got cancer after the first few, but was successfully treated. She now thinks – after six shots! – that they are dangerous and she won't be having any more. So it is never too late.

    4. I've had the Pfizer jab every year since the "double hit" when the vaccine first became available. I have a circle of friends, plus family who have all been regularly vaccinated. None of us had any side effects. A couple of those people have had very mild Covid – more like a cold than anything else. And that's the vaccine doing what it was designed to do – stop the worst effects and enable people to carry on.

      The only person I know of who was negatively impacted is a English friend who had the misfortune to have the AstraZeneca vaccine – he had a headache for days afterwards severe enough that he sought medical care. And his follow ups have been Pfizer – doctor's orders. We never had that vaccine here as AstraZeneca decided not to seek US approval. And apparently AstraZeneca has stopped producing it.

      Equally, I have not even had a cold since having regular Covid boosters, so being in a high risk category, I shall continue with them.

        As a result I have never caught anything with cold-like or flu-like symptoms since I last caught a severe cold after being sneezed on, by a filthy uncouth twat, in the departures lounge at Stansted airport back in November 2019.

        My one only 'flu-jab was back in 1970. I collapsed soon afterwards with an adverse reaction. I vowed, there and then, to never repeat the experience. Nor have I done so.

        I had a cold and had an uncomfortable night so we thought we had better have a check up so the district nurse came and tested me and the test result was faint but it said I had Covid. I had a good sleep and woke later that day, felt fresh and recovered and that was all there was to it. Caroline took the same test when the nurse was at our house to test me and her test was very strongly positive even though she was not ill and did not become ill. However at the same time several of our friends and family members had Covid and were quite ill and had to stay off work for a week.

        Our Covid was very useful because at the time only the Covid jabbed and those who had had Covid were allowed to travel abroad. A few months later a much loved uncle of Caroline's died and we were able to travel to England for the funeral even though we had not been jabbed because we had doctors' certificates saying we had had Covid.

Neither me nor anybody else in my circle of family and close friends have had anything other than trifling reactions, localised tenderness and perhaps mild cold symptoms, to either the AstraZeneca or Pfizer vaccines. Come to that, influenza vaccines are a walk in the park, too. When the time comes to have the pneumonia and shingles vaccines, I won't hesitate to take them.

        We did the Holyhead/Dublin ferry yesterday and stayed overnight with a friend. We then drove to Killarney today.

        My grandparents win the Loch Leane Bridge trophy in c 1954. My dad says that it was the first proper holiday my grandmother (b. 1904) had had in her life. She talked about it ever after.

        Dad wanted to see what all the fuss was about, we looked just now at whether there is still a bridge club (apparently the actual real trophy was huge but my grandparents only got a small replica).

  70. Evening all. Will be on my way back tomorrow, breaking the journey at Oakham. Had a good day. Went to Langham Dome and then into Sheringham on the Forties Special double decker. Even managed to march in the closing parade. The dogs were good and Winston got a lot of fuss, including from the chap playing his name sake. Winston wasn’t very keen on marking time, beagles don’t do wait or patience.

    1. Been an awful long time since I visited Oakham. Back in the days pre-beard, I was at school in Uppingham, down the road.

        1. The Vacuum Man Dyson was at Gresham's and has given the school many of millions of pounds to say 'thank you' as his father was a teacher there who died when James was a boy. The school then educated the boy without asking for fees.

          Bill's MR was an English teacher there when our elder son, Christo, arrived at the school.

      2. I spent some time in Uppingham in the 1960s and 70s as I had a girlfriend who lived there and I used to drive there from Norwich along the A47 in my MGA when I was a student at the University of East Anglia.

      3. Visited the stone quarries there many years ago. Back then the owner of Clipsham was reluctant to exploit more than the minimum required for Oxford Colleges. He was however prepared to let me have some Clipsham Blue which is stone with a blue streak in it.

        Eventually the blue tones down and is unrecognisable to an untrained eye. I see the stuff all over Oxford and a lot in Cambridge too.

        I recall also, back in the early seventies, taking a train which for some reason or other was diverted from the main line through Oakham. I assumed then that Oakham was a survivor from Beeching but only just.

    I can't do it all but what i do know is i will do what i can.

    The dogs are going back to the breeder tomorrow.

    I will do the sitting around in the bloody hospital for hours and hours.

    I was once taught to look after the living and not the dead.

My memory now is all over the place..I see messages here I made yesterday evening, I check the discussion and still can't recall why I responded why I did. And my sense of time and place is…well, out of time and place. But I can recall events from many years/decades ago, as clear as if they happened recently. EOD perhaps but family say vaccine.   92. We (mum and dad and me) were in Limerick yesterday in St John’s Castle. They had a wonderful map of the British Isles (undated) which we couldn’t read due to our various eyesight issues, so i took photos for us to look at later. I’ll try and post them, but i have a fickle phone so don’t hold your breath.
